U.S. Social Security Administration announces 3.6% cost-of-living adjustment for 2027
The U.S. Social Security Administration announced a 3.6% cost-of-living adjustment for 2027. This will raise average monthly checks by about $75 for 72 million Social Security recipients nationally. The increase has not yet been disbursed and is scheduled to begin in January 2027.
Why it matters
This adjustment responds to inflation eroding the purchasing power of fixed incomes by increasing benefit amounts to keep pace with rising costs.
