FDA approves Merck's first-in-class oral PCSK9 drug
The FDA has approved Merck's first-in-class oral PCSK9 drug, Lipfendra, for high cholesterol on a national level. In six-month trials, the drug reduced LDL cholesterol by up to 60 percent. Its real-world impact is not yet known as the treatment is newly approved.
Why it matters
This provides the first oral option for patients who need PCSK9 inhibitors, a class of drugs previously only available as injections.
