Study estimates B.C.'s free naloxone program prevented most potentially fatal overdoses

A new study found that British Columbia's free take-home naloxone program prevented roughly 4 out of 5 potentially fatal overdoses during the province's toxic drug crisis. The 4 out of 5 figure is the study's modeled estimate, not a directly observed count. The finding comes from a single study reported by CBC and has not yet been independently corroborated.

Why it matters

The toxic drug crisis has killed thousands in B.C., and this study offers early evidence that distributing naloxone widely may be keeping many overdoses from turning fatal.
