FDA Approves Lipfendra to Reduce Cholesterol in High-Risk Patients
The FDA approved Merck's Lipfendra nationwide for high-risk patients already taking statins. It is the first oral PCSK9 inhibitor. The approval is based on two studies and long-term data is limited to one year. Patients must take the medication on an empty stomach.
Why it matters
This provides a new oral option for lowering LDL cholesterol in patients who need more help than statins provide.
