Burkina Faso opens its first gold refinery in Ouagadougou.
Burkina Faso opened its first gold refinery, Raffinor-BF, in its capital. The facility is a national project with an initial refining capacity of 164 tonnes of gold per year. However, the refinery is newly inaugurated and its capacity figures are from the government and have not been independently audited.
Why it matters
This responds to the problem of mining profits leaving the country by enabling domestic gold refining, which is evidence of progress toward retaining more of the value from its natural resources.
