Paris requires helmet and high-visibility vest for privately owned e-scooters on public roads
Paris now requires riders of privately owned electric scooters on public roads to wear approved helmets and high-visibility vests. Fines are €135 for not wearing a helmet and €35 for missing a vest or retro-reflectors. The citywide regulation is newly introduced, and its enforcement and compliance levels are not yet known.
Why it matters
This rule is a direct response to the safety risks associated with the rapid growth of e-scooter use in cities, establishing a clear legal standard for rider protection.
