Ethiopia reports more than 100,000 electric vehicles after fossil-fuel car import ban
Ethiopia banned imports of fossil-fuel cars in 2024, and government sources now report more than 100,000 electric vehicles out of 1.2 million registered nationally. In Addis Ababa, 100 electric buses were introduced in 2025, carrying about 90,000 passengers a day. The figures come from a single report by Deutsche Welle and are attributed to government and reported sources without independent corroboration, and a target of 500,000 EVs by 2030 is a projection rather than a delivered result.
Why it matters
Road transport is a major source of fuel imports and emissions in many developing countries, and Ethiopia's shift offers early evidence that policy can move a national vehicle fleet toward electric power.
